8 Signs You Need Hot Water System Repairs or Replacement

Since you use your sinks and showers every day to wash, bathe and clean, it’s important to keep your hot water system well-maintained. You must know when to repair or replace your water heater. Hot water plumbers in Melbourne say that if you fully understand how the system works, you will be able to invest in hot water systems repair or replacement that is effective yet affordable.

Never get caught in the cold! Read on to learn the eight tell-tale signs that your hot water system is failing and needs repairs or replacement.

1. No hot water

A lack of hot water is one of the most common signs of water heater failure. Your shower may be giving out lukewarm water or it takes quite a long time for the water to get hot.

Water heaters usually have a storage tank that accommodates 30-50 gallons of water. As the water is heated by electricity or gas, water minerals will separate and settle at the bottom of the tank. Eventually, these mineral deposits will build up, creating a barrier between the water and the burner. As a result, you get cold to lukewarm water from your sink and shower.

When left unaddressed, more sediments will build up in the tank. Over time, your water heater will fail, which can then lead to a hefty water bill and a hot water system that must be replaced.

Thus, it is crucial for you to have your water tank flushed annually. This is the best way to prevent the continuous build-up of sediments at the bottom of your tank.

2. Rusty-smelling and/or cloudy water

If your tap water looks cloudy and/or smells rusty, a failed water heater may be the culprit. The water becomes murky because of the mineral deposits that travel out of your hot water system. Often, these deposits emit a metallic odour as well.

Though you can use a water filter to solve this problem, this is just a temporary fix. Professional plumbers highly recommend replacing your water heater, along with the pipes, to prevent the corrosion from causing a leak.

3. Damaged TPR valve

If the pressure or temperature in your water heater is too high, the temperature and pressure relief (TPR) valve opens to release the pressure build-up, thus preventing an explosion. But if there is a significant build-up of rust and mineral deposits, this valve can freeze and function ineffectively.  When left unaddressed, a faulty TPR valve can lead to property damage and even to personal injury.

Thus, your TPR valve should be tested regularly by raising and lowering the test level so it will lift the brass stem where the valve is attached to. If hot water isn’t coming out from the end of the drainpipe or you notice a water leak, it is time to call your plumber to replace the TPR valve.

4. Strange noise

If you hear rumbling, creaking or popping noises from your water heater, this means that there are pockets of air in the sediment layer that is boiling with the water. These strange sounds will be eliminated if the sediments are flushed from your tank. Otherwise, your hot water system may be suffering from a more serious problem.

5. Water leakage in your tank

If water leakage is coming from your tank and not the TPR valve, this means that the inner lining of the tank has already been corroded because of neglect, age or sediment build-up. The best course of action is to replace your water heater tank to prevent water from flooding your yard and entire house, leading to lawn damage and costly home repairs.

6. High energy bills

To make sure that your hot water system is working efficiently, check your monthly water and energy bills. If they are getting higher and higher every month, an overworked water heater may be the main culprit.

7. Aged hot water heater

Most hot water heaters can last for up to 15 years, but not all hot water systems are created the same. Thus, you should check your owner’s manual to figure out its specific lifespan. Of course, you should replace it if it’s past due.

8. Constant repairs

If your hot water system is undergoing constant repairs, a replacement can be a better option. Don’t spend a lot of money on repairs! Instead, let a reputable plumbing expert replace it with one that has energy efficiency features.

Your hot water system is one of the most vital home appliances as it provides hot water whenever you need it. By knowing the signs of a failed water heater, you can prevent cold to lukewarm water from ruining your day. And once any of these signs arise, make sure to contact a reputable plumbing company ASAP.
